It’s been reported today that there are three new characters headed to the Chatsworth Estate when Shameless returns to our screens with a new series on January 10th.

They are former EastEnders stars Stephen Lord and Angeline Ball – who played Jase Dyer and Maggie Townsend respectively in ‘Enders – who play the roles of brother and sister, Dominic and Gloria Meek.

Dominic is described as a priest who needs to “sort his head out”, so he’s sent to Manchester on a sabbatical.

Also newly cast is Kari Corbett who will play the role of Ruby Maguire

Speaking to the Sun, a show insider said of Stephen, “Stephen is going to be an awesome character — he is a brilliant actor.

“His first entrance is totally nude and hungover and he can’t remember if he slept with one or two girls the previous night. It is going to ruffle a few feathers.”

And of Angeline’s character Gloria, who’s a hairdresser, the insider added, “They look out for each other but they can drive each other mad at the same time.”

It’s also been revealed that in the new series, Jack Deam returns as Tourette’s sufferer Marty, who is set to get Kelly (Sally Carman) pregnant!

Raiders who stole thousands of pounds by tunnelling under a cash machine echoed a forthcoming storyline from TV's Shameless.

Producers of the Channel 4 show have revealed that the same plot is to feature as a cliff-hanger two-part story during the current series, which was filmed months ago.

Audacious thieves escaped with £6,000 after digging a 100ft tunnel to gain access to a cashpoint in Manchester, where the show is filmed.

In the TV version, Frank Gallagher (played by David Threlfall) is among the workshy Chatsworth estate residents who use a tunnel to steal Lottery scratchcards.

But their escapade proves to be less straightforward - and successful - when the tunnel collapses, and viewers will have to see whether they can be freed.

Production staff on the series spent months planning the storyline and building the set with caverns, tunnels, sewers and vertical shafts which were more than 30ft high. Cast and crew had to be strapped into safety harnesses to allow them to travel down the shafts.

In the real-life raid, the thieves - dubbed the "mole gang" - burrowed from a railway embankment, under a car park and beneath the foundations of a Blockbuster store in Levenshulme to reach the cashpoint inside.

Shameless producer Jean Holdsworth said: "We've spent months working and filming our tunnel heist, which we thought was a top secret storyline.

"It's a major cliff-hanger for the end of the current series of Shameless and we couldn't believe it when we saw the news at the weekend.

"Shameless has a knack for staying topical, often filming storylines months ahead of real-life events mirroring our drama. We recently had our very own take on David Cameron's Shameless Squads with our Eviction Task Force, which again was filmed over six months ago - and now this."

STV's Scotland Tonight was last night interrupted by a sex scene from Shameless.

During a debate on Ed Miliband's leadership of the Labour Party, a distant monitor in the studio showed a topless blonde character from the Channel 4 drama.

However, the broadcaster only apologised once a formal complaint was made by viewer Paul Traynor.

"Nobody even spotted the scene until we received a complaint and played back the video," a channel source told the Daily Record. "It's unfortunate but in a busy newsroom we have monitors showing the various TV channels.

"The show was on after the watershed but we will try not to let it happen again."

Traynor's letter read: "Is this really what we've come to expect of Scottish journalism? Someone should explain why, while watching the political debate with John Mackay about Ed Miliband, some irresponsible employee decided to watch porn in the studio while live on TV."

Meanwhile, an STV spokesman said in a statement: "We hope viewers weren't distracted by the unexpected content."

Shameless creator Paul Abbott has called time on the character of Frank Gallagher after 11 series of the BAFTA award-winning Channel 4 drama. The writer announced that dysfunctional alcoholic Gallagher and his family will make one last outing on Manchester's Chatsworth council estate with a new series to be broadcast early next year.

The last hoorah is due to hit television screens in 2013 and will mark 10 years since the drama was first filmed in Manchester in 2003. Abbott revealed his reasons for putting an end to the beloved show, which first aired in January of 2004, were very personal and largely due to the recent passing of his father. He said: 'Its 10th anniversary seems a fitting time to shut the book on Shameless.' 'But this is also the year my dad died and he was, in abstract, my core inspiration for starting the whole Shameless party rolling, I wanted to make invisible people vivid.' 'Closing the two eras in the same year feels very right. Now I'm off to build the next whatever-it-is.'

Shameless, starring David Threlfall as Frank Gallagher, helped launch the careers of some of today's finest acting talents such as James McAvoy, Anne-Marie Duff and Maxine Peake. The show, which also stars Rebecca Atkinson, Elliot Tittensor and Tina Malone, led to the spawning of a US version of the show. A hit in America, the television series stars Hollywood A-list actor William H. Macy and actresses Emily Rossum and Amy Smart.

Channel 4 chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: 'Shameless, ground-breaking when it launched and gob-smacking ever since, has over the years built a loyal following. 'We are in Paul Abbott's debt for bringing his defiantly dysfunctional band of characters to Channel 4 and I'm delighted to say we have other drama projects with Paul in the pipeline.' Fans will no doubt be devastated at the news as the programme was an instant hit, and continued to be, throughout its 139 episodes.
