The London premiere of Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds " turned into a war of words after Tom Cruise was squirted in the face by a man posing as a reporter.

Four men were released on bail and were ordered to return to a police station Monday, when they may be charged with assault, a police spokesman said.

The 42-year-old actor was outside a movie theater in central London's Leicester Square doing press interviews Sunday when a man squirted Cruise with a water pistol disguised as a microphone, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Cruise appeared to laugh at the incident but then asked the prankster: "Why would you do that?"

As the man gave a barely audible excuse, Cruise said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?" The prankster tried to walk away but Cruise reached across the metal barrier, held his arm and said: "Don't run away. That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that ... it's incredibly rude."

The actor grew increasingly irritated and told the man: "You're a jerk."

Here's ITV News version:

Cruise drenched at UK premiere
8.24PM, Mon Jun 20 2005

Four men have been arrested and bailed for allegedly drenching Tom Cruise with water at the London premiere of his new film.
Hollywood star Cruise was furious after the prank which is understood to have been carried out by a freelance film crew working on a new Channel 4 comedy.

He was speaking to journalists at the Leicester Square premiere of Steven Spielberg's War Of The Worlds when a man with a fake microphone squirted water in his face and over his jacket.

The star struggled to maintain his composure as he reacted by repeatedly calling the joker a "jerk".

He said: "Why would you do that, why would you do that, why would you do that?"

As the prankster attempted to explain himself, Cruise said: "Do you like thinking less of people, is that it?"

The man went to walk away but Cruise said: "Don't run away."

He fixed his assailant with an angry stare and said: "That's incredibly rude. I'm here giving you an interview and you do that, it's incredibly rude".

Cruise then said forcibly: "You're a jerk, you're a jerk".

The man was escorted away by security guards and taken inside the cinema.

He and three colleagues were arrested and bailed pending further inquiries. They could all face assault charges.

Apparently, it was a stunt for a channel 4 comedy sketch show, which now may not be aired!!

He obviously thinks he is too much of a star to have a practical joke played on him.

The same people did this to Sharon Osborne, she reacted more strongly. After swearing loudly she ran into a restautant, snatched an icebucket full of water and drenched the jokers!

Heehee! So cute. Aww love him. I'd have a go at them too, so he's got a right to get upset. Maybe it was an expensive suit. *huggles Tom* But...assault charges? I think that's a bit far.

Look at Christian Slater in New York - he touched someones backside "by accident" and suddenly he was looking at assault charges!! :searchme:

Well i thought it was quite funny to start off with until my mum pointed out that he could have thought the guy was pulling a gun out on him or something serious like that....

Now i'm not sure about this (was still half sleep this morning when it was on) I think i heard Sharon Osborne saying they had got her too but she just went a filled a bucket and poured it over them....good on her a taste of there own medicine

I thought it was from a mike? So - Where would the gun come from? (or did tey take it out, point and... er, 'shoot'? :D)

He's over-reacting. Comepltely - You get wet, you dry off. If it was someone who did that to someone walking down the street, the police would laugh you out of town.

I just laughed at the news reports. And on Channel 5 they concentrated more on how he quickly reacted to be squirted or 'assaulted'. I think that went too far. It should of been taken in jest, but instead was made into a much bigger story than it should of been. Apparently some expert was saying when he was trying to discuss what had happened with the interviewer he was using a lot of hand gestures, which indicated paternal movements and what a teacher would use as a point of authority. Read into that what you will, but when Tom Cruise wants publicity he certainly goes for it. I mean he was being advised not to let all of this be shown on tv, but he said: "No, let the camera on him. I don't care." Anyway all this is now yesterday fish and chip paper to us, but to the media it's just another chance to make something a lot bigger than it actually. is. Confused? I certainly am!
