BBC PicturesWriters Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have revealed that new BBC drama Sherlock will not focus heavily on the great detective's drug abuse.

Speaking to Last Broadcast, the pair explained that the use of drugs was not as prominent a theme in Conan Doyle's original stories as some viewers might think.

"Many people point out the drug use in Sherlock Holmes, but there are more references to Sherlock Holmes laughing than there are to taking cocaine or morphine but, oddly enough, people never think about that," argued Gatiss.

He added: "I understand why, but the important thing is to not get it out of context with the rest of the character."

Doctor Who showrunner Moffat explained that he and Gatiss had considered Holmes's drug habit when adapting the character for the modern age.

"I think you'd have to ask the question, would a man like Sherlock Holmes be a coke addict today?" he said. "In Victorian times everybody was taking some kind of drug, largely because there was no such thing as a painkiller. It is a very different thing to say that Sherlock Holmes is a coke addict now."

Moffat wrote the first episode of the series, titled 'A Study In Pink', while Gatiss penned following instalment 'The Blind Banker'.

Sherlock - starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the famous detective - is due to air on Sunday, July 25 at 9pm on BBC One.

Sunday 1 August
9.00-10.30pm BBC ONE and BBC HD

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman embark on their second thrilling, scary, action-packed and hugely entertaining adventure as Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson.

Watson's new life is never dull – after all, he's sharing a flat with Sherlock Holmes. But solving mysteries won't pay the bills. The trouble is, though, that Sherlock's idea of a visit to the bank is not quite what Watson had in mind.

Sherlock and Watson must decipher the deadly symbols before anyone else falls victim to the mysterious Black Lotus.

Sherlock Holmes is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and John Watson by Martin Freeman, Mrs Hudson by Una Stubbs, Molly Hooper by Louise Brealey, DI Dimmock by Paul Chequer, Sarah by Zoe Telford, Soo Lin Yao by Gemma Chan, the opera singer by Sarah Lam and Amanda by Olivia Poulet.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has said that the series includes "lots of action".

The 34-year-old, who stars as Sherlock Holmes, revealed the detective's involvement in modern-day gunfights and Kung-Fu in an interview with What's On TV.

"There's lots of action. We have chase scenes, we have gunfights, I have Kung-Fu sequences, and Martin [Freeman] and I have quite a few jumps and stunts," he said.

"I have a fight with a Chinese warlord, I shoot at a human giant who strangles people with his bare hands, and I run after a taxicab, without giving too much away!"

Sherlock starts this Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.

Sherlock is on the verge of being renewed for a second series by the BBC, the corporation confirmed today.

Written by Doctor Who's Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the first episode of the modern-day adaptation premiered with a huge audience of 7.5 million, and was well-received by critics.

"We'd like to do more. But if we do, they won't air for at least a year. Drama takes at least a year to get made and Steven is also really busy with Doctor Who," head of drama Ben Stephenson said in a statement.

Sherlock, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, continues this Sunday, with 'The Blind Banker' - the second of three episodes - airing at the slightly earlier time of 8.30pm.

BBC One's Sherlock looks as if it could become a big hit with US viewers after being bought by TV network PBS.

The first three episodes of Sherlock, which are due to air from October 24, have already received a "positive response" from US critics.

And Benedict Cumberbatch - who stars alongside Martin Freeman show - has just returned from a promotional tour in Los Angeles, along with writers Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatiss.

Benedict - who will also star in Steven Spielberg's next film War Horse - added that he hopes US viewers will enjoy the show, which transports Holmes and Watson to the modern era.

"If I had a penny for every time a fan of the originals had come up to me and said, 'I didn't want to like this, but I did,' I'd be a rich man," he said.

"The response has been phenomenal and it's great. We are very flattered."

Wow how amazing was that episode? It had me gripped right the way trhrough.
The chemistry between Irene Adler and Sherlock, it was tantalizing. I would say all sorts if these weren't boards for all ages.

I had to look the actress up on IMDB and never recognized her as being in Spooks. Well done.

I hope they bring her back.

Why? He was shown as being still alive.

This was before episode 3 was shown. I think he didn't want to give the plot away! Because in the book he dies. And of course Sir Arthur Conan Doyle resurected him after complaints from his readers. So it could have gone either way.

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat has hinted that fans have missed a vital clue from the show's second series finale.

'The Reichenbach Fall' saw Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) apparently plummet to his death, only for the character to later reappear unharmed.

"I've been online and looked at all the theories," Moffat told the Radio Times. "And there's one clue that everyone's missed."

He added: "It's something that Sherlock did that was very out of character, but which nobody has picked up on." :hmm:

Moffat and series co-creator Mark Gatiss have confirmed that Sherlock will return for a third series, indicating that they have no plans to end the hit detective drama.

"We love doing this, this is brilliant fun so [we'll keep going] as long as we can keep Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] coming back," said the writer.

The second series of Sherlock concluded on Sunday night, pulling in 7.9m for BBC One.

Steven Moffat has claimed that Sherlock could return to screens later this year.

The writer also told The Guardian that some of Sherlock's survival scenes have already been filmed.

Last Sunday's series finale 'The Reichenbach Fall' saw the detective (Benedict Cumberbatch) seemingly plummet to his death, only for the character to reappear unharmed in the last scene.

"We've worked out how Sherlock survives," Moffat revealed. "And actually shot part of what really happened. It all makes sense."

The Doctor Who showrunner also joked that he and co-creator Mark Gatiss have imagined a better ending than author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Referring to the plot of Doyle's Final Problem, Moffat added: "He cheated outrageously. He has Watson deduce that Holmes fell off a waterfall. But there was no body. And it only means one thing in a detective show when there's no body.

"We had to have Holmes dying in Watson's arms - and get away with that, which we have."

Sherlock executive producer Sue Vertue has dismissed suggestions apparently made by Steven Moffat that the programme will return in 2012.

The showrunner was supposed to have said on Friday (January 20) that a third series of the BBC drama - which concluded last Sunday (January 15) - would air later this year.

Moffat also apparently claimed that scenes showing how Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) survived his rooftop plummet in series two finale 'The Reichenbach Fall' had already been filmed.

In response to the comments, Vertue has taken to Twitter and clarified that a 2012 Sherlock return is "sadly unlikely".

"Sorry to be a killjoy but @steven_moffat didn't actually mean S3 of #sherlock would tx before end of year," she wrote. "I think that is sadly unlikely."

Moffat has, however, said that fans will not have to wait "that long" for the next series of Sherlock.

He confirmed this week that a third run of the show had been secretly commissioned along with its second last year.

Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has revealed the first details about a third series.

Gatiss - who also plays Mycroft in the BBC drama - appeared to confirm that the first episode of the new run will be an adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Adventure of the Empty House'.

The Sherlock series two finale - which saw Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) apparently plummet to his death - was a loose adaptation of Conan Doyle's 'The Final Problem', with 'The Empty House' being the next story chronologically in the canon.

"There's certain things about 'The Adventure of the Empty House' which feel set in stone because that's how Sherlock comes back, but at the same time we feel free to invent and to introduce new stuff to it," Gatiss told PA.

"I always found it a little unlikely that Dr Watson's only reaction was to faint for instance - as supposed to possibly a stream of terrible swear words."

The writer and actor added that the "overall feel" of Sherlock's third series will dictate which Conan Doyle tales will make up the second and third episodes.

"Steven [Moffat] and I have our all-time favourites, but it's really a question of what will fit into the structure," he explained.

The third series of Sherlock is expected to begin filming in early 2013.

The third season of the BBC's Sherlock could be its last, reports the Sunday Express.

The forthcoming series of the show - based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective - is due to begin filming early next year, but the success of lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman could mean that the new episodes will be their final outing as Holmes and Watson.

"Benedict and Martin love Sherlock," said an insider. "It's been fabulous for both of them but it's a question of schedules. They will no doubt be signing off in style."

Over the past year, both actors have been busy filming Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy in New Zealand. Freeman plays central character Bilbo Baggins, while Cumberbatch plays the dragon Smaug.

Cumberbatch will also appear in the second of JJ Abrams's Star Trek films, which is due to be released in early 2013. The 36-year-old is currently starring in BBC period drama Parade's End.

"I need to have some more talks with [the writers] and tease them about the fact that I do have a career outside of Sherlock now," he joked. "So they'd better write something."

Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that a fourth series of Sherlock is in the works.

The Star Trek actor revealed at the South Bank Show Awards that both he and co-star Martin Freeman have signed up for more episodes, the Radio Times claims.

"We've agreed to two more series but I'm probably going to get into trouble for saying that," said Cumberbatch. "All I know at the moment is I'm doing these three and another three."

On the show's future beyond a fourth run, he added: "It just depends on Martin and I's availability, how long we can keep it going. It depends on Steven's (Moffat, showrunner) ability. I'd love to keep it going."

Cumberbatch previously stated in June last year that Sherlock could continue beyond its upcoming third series.

"We only do three [episodes] at a time, so I think the normal fear of over-stretching the mark and just doing too many [doesn't apply]," he explained.

He continued: "I'd like to see [Sherlock] getting older. We're starting quite young. It's rare to see Holmes and Watson at the beginning of their relationship; we usually join them in their mid-to-late 40s or 50s. I've got a way to go. I mean, I'm only 35."

Production recently commenced on three more Sherlock episodes, with the first read-through taking place in Cardiff yesterday (Monday, March 12).

Sherlock has cast Lars Mikkelsen as a villain in its third series.

The Danish actor - who appeared in the original version of The Killing - will play "Sherlock's new nemesis" Charles Augustus Magnussen.

Exec producer Sue Vertue confirmed Mikkelsen's casting on Twitter.

Though further details of his character are yet to be revealed, Magnussen is likely based on the character of Charles Augustus Milverton, who appeared in a 1904 short story penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

'The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton' saw Holmes and Watson confront the title character - a murderous blackmailer.

Mikkelsen - the brother of Casino Royale and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen - is best known for his roles in The Killing and Borgen, both of which aired on BBC Four in the UK.

Sherlock is expected to return to BBC One in late 2013.

Amanda Abbington has confirmed that she is to play Mary Morstan in the third series of Sherlock.

Martin Freeman's real-life partner had long been rumoured to be portraying Morstan - John Watson's love interest and eventual wife in the Arthur Conan Doyle books.

Abbington revealed to The Scotsman that her character has "fantastic secrets" and comes between Watson and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) as a "kind of third wheel".

"I remember doing a scene very early on with Martin and Ben, and I was standing in between them and I thought, 'I really have to up my game, this is proper'," she said.

"They really bounce off each other. When I was at the read-through, I remember watching them, and the chemistry between them is just amazing. They do have this beautiful relationship, so getting in between that - which is what Mary does, she becomes this kind of third wheel - was scary.

"Also, the fans love these two together, so I'm sure Mary won't be particularly liked by them, but I hope that on the whole people really like her, because she's a great character and she has some fantastic secrets."

Abbington went on to reveal that co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss had always had her in mind for the character.

Speaking of how she landed the part, she recalled: "We were at Mark Gatiss's house when 'The Hounds of Baskerville' first came on the telly. Afterwards they went into the kitchen and were sitting talking about the next series. I went in and sat with them.

"It had been mooted that I would be in it, might have a little part in it. They were talking about who might play Mary and I was like, 'So, who are you thinking of?' and they said 'You'.

"I got very emotional because it just seemed so amazing, just such a gift."

Sherlock will return to BBC One in the coming months.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at last weekend's MCM London Comic Con, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have revealed a squeak more information about the forthcoming Sherlock Christmas Special, The Abominable Bride, arriving on BBC One and in select cinemas around the UK on the 1st of January.

Gatiss confirmed that The Abominable Bride "is mostly an original story, inspired by a reference in one of the [Doyle] stories to one of the ones that Dr Watson never wrote about." Steven Moffat continued, "There are loads and loads of details from the original stories, and there is a case referenced in the story about 'Ricoletti with the club foot and his abominable wife', so this is broadly speaking, that.”

The Doyle story in question is The Adventure Of The Musgrave Ritual, a tale of riddles, hidden treasure and death, and here's the line to which Moffat refers, spoken by Sherlock Holmes, "Here's the record of the Tarleton murders and the case of Vamberry, the wine merchant, and the adventure of the old Russian woman, and the singular affair of the aluminium crutch, as well as a full account of Ricoletti of the club foot and his abominable wife."

"Proper Gothic horror" is Amanda Abbington's description of the Special, with Gatiss calling it "a Christmas ghost story" and "the definition of a treat".
