Actress Joanna Lumley is joining the cast of the final series of BBC drama Mistresses, it has been announced.

The 63-year-old will play Katie's bossy mother in the programme, about the lives of four female friends.

Lumley, who spearheaded the Gurkha's campaign for the right to live in the UK earlier this year, said she was "thrilled" to be a part of the show.

Filming on the finale is expected to start in Spring next year, and will be screened on BBC One later in 2010.

'Explosive finale'

Bethan Jones, executive producer of Mistresses, said: "'We are absolutely delighted to welcome another Mistress to the fold in the shape of the sublime Joanna Lumley.

The Mistresses saga sees friendship tested to the limit
"Joanna's involvement is just one of the many treats we have in store for what is shaping up to be an explosive finale."

The male elements of the cast, Richard, Dominic and Mark, will reprise their roles along with the four chief characters.

Lumley's character, Vivienne, imposes herself on Katie - played by Sarah Parish - in a bid to make a fresh start and inevitably causes ructions.

The third and final series of the drama will bring together the strands of the quartet's tangled and often difficult friendships, with more shocking revelations planned for its last outing.
